Stress affects all of us. Humans are all affected by stress to different degrees and we all struggle with it. Some of us handle it better than others and certainly we can learn from those who handle it well. But the fact of the matter is, if not handled properly, stress can be an extremely destructive force that ripples through all aspects of our lives.
So what is stress? A great friend of mine once said, “stress is simply a lack of energy”. If we have unlimited energy and patience we would never be stressed. But when our energy is low and we feel we cannot handle what’s on our plates the stress creeps in and affects our whole beings. So managing that stress is indeed very important for a productive and healthy life.
Why do people turn to addictions when they are stressed? To escape. In alcohol, in drugs, and in porn we escape. We make ourselves feel good and forget about all this stress. So where do things go terribly wrong? Escape is only temporary. It resolves nothing and in fact only serves to increase our stress and problems in the end. Our unresolved issues will still be there later, only they will be even more stressful than before.
So, how do we handle all of this stress? A key to overcoming any addiction is to learn how to manage your stress. Learn how to be aware of when you are getting stressed and do something healthy to recharge your energy instead of resorting to porn. One great example is exercise which serves to clear our mind and revitalize our energy, thus preparing us to handle our situation with reduced stress. Some other effective tools include practicing mindfulness to be aware of our feelings, and meditation which can help clear our mind and revitalize our energy. By using healthy means for managing stress we recharge our energy and then can tackle the cause of our stress, thus alleviating it. In contrast, resorting to an addiction only compounds our stress.
