While it is hard for many of us to admit, porn addiction usually coincides with some form of depression or at least a void in your life. Porn users often feel empowered by the act perhaps more so than they do in other aspects of their life. So, when you subtract porn from the equation of your daily, weekly, or monthly routine, you have to fill the void that is left behind. If you ignore this void you will inevitably end up watching porn again and returning to the vicious cycle.
To that same token, it is when you feel down and powerless that you are most vulnerable to watching porn. Perhaps you had a bad day at work or a difficult personal event. Perhaps you feel that all your efforts just aren't working or you're just feeling a little depressed. It is moments like this when you are most vulnerable to use porn to fill the void and momentarily feel empowered. The flip side of that being that afterwards you will feel bad about yourself for doing it again. So, filling this void with positive activities is key to overcoming the addiction.
So, how do you fill the void? There are many ways you can fill the void and add empowerment and satisfaction to your life. Some ideas are:
- Volunteer in your community or with an organization
- Start working out
- Try new things you've always wanted to try
- Join a sports team
- Start a business (if this is a dream of yours)
- Write a book (some of us have always wanted to)
- Help other people
- Start pursuing your dream
- Pursue your dream job (the one you’ve always wanted)
- Start a new hobby (cars, photography, art)
These are just some ideas. The point is to get out of your shell and do things that bring you satisfaction and a sense of empowerment. If you feel satisfied every day and empowered over your life you will find that you think about porn less and it will be much easier to quit for good. It will no longer be something you resort to or continue to fall back upon.
